City/State: Valhalla, NY Category: Professional/Non-Clinical Department: Health Info Mgmt-WMC Health Position: Full Time Hours: M-F 9-5 Shift: Day Req #: 13099 Posted Date: Aug 30, 2019 Apply Now External Applicant linkInternal Applicant link Job Details: Summary: Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class is responsible for coding inpatient medical records, including all diagnoses, operative and diagnostic procedures and present on admission indicators using the current International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM) and Procedures (ICD-10-PCS and entering coded information into an automated grouper system.This class differs from the Medical Records Coder I in the complexity of cases assigned and experience required to perform the duties.The inpatient Coder II will also be responsible to send retrospective queries to the CDI team for clarification of diagnoses and procedures if needed.Supervision is not a responsibility of this class.Does related work as required.Duties:Using the current ICD-10-CM and PCS coding systems, assigns and records an accurate code to all diagnoses, procedures and operations as documented by the attending, operating and consulting physicians in the patient's medical record.Enters final diagnostic and procedural code numbers into an automated grouper system (3M).Ensures that all factors necessary for assigning an accurate DRG are present, and that all diagnoses are ranked properly.Enters the correct discharge disposition in 3M.Makes appropriate contact in order to acquire or clarify necessary information.Required knowledge, skills, abilities and attributes:Thorough knowledge of current ICD-10-CM and PCS codes,coding guidelines, DRGs, medical terminology, principles of the medical record system and its operation.Ability to understand and code medical records; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to effectively use computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments.Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; thoroughness; sound judgment; tact; discretion; initiative; accuracy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.Minimal acceptable training and Experience: High school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience where the primary function of the position must have been medical records coding, two of which have been within the last three years.AHIMA CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) is required.
